When do medical schools send invites for medical school interviews?

Students applying to medicine for 2023 entry should start to receive invites for medical school interviews soon. Speaking to our students on our Medical School Interview Course on the 6th of November 2022, none had yet been called for interview.

  • Some have been given an element of coursework to complete from medical schools, which is a positive outcome as it shows the application is being considered πŸ˜€

  • Students applying for graduate entry or any other entry pathway to medicine other than the standard 5 year degree may have a different admission process or have certain elements of their application, for example work experience, come under greater scrutiny πŸ”Ž

  • If you know a student in your school that has been called for interview at the same medical school you have applied for and you have not yet (or been given coursework and you have not) do not take this as a sign that your application is in trouble 😳

  • Medical schools can traditionally call for interview between November and April. However, during the COVID19 pandemic, some medical schools appeared to experience a backlog, and some did interview beyond this period ⏱

  • The final UCAS deadline for universities appears to be around July but we expect all medical schools to decide on offers way before this.

  • For Buckingham, which is a private medical school, we have known them to interview over the summer holiday.

  • Most medical schools will be interviewing in person, but a small number have retained online interviews. The MMI format is still used by the majority.

  • Medical schools can also use alternative terminology e.g. β€˜assessment days’. You should still prepare for such assessments as you would for a medical school interview unless they give you other specific information to suggest otherwise.

  • Medical schools do not always indicate the topics they assess in interviews, or the specific number of stations or length of the interview. Some will provide this information only to those that are called for interview and other students will only find out on the day.

  • In the past, a small number of medical schools have released the questions candidates will be asked before your interview. You may feel this is an advantage but remember every student will also have had access to the same information.

  • Remember that you will potentially have four interviews at four medical schools and not to be disheartened or put off if one of them does not call you for interview or declines you after interview. You should ask for feedback if you are unsuccessful in an application and the medical school should provide you with this.

  • Most medical schools will send invites for interview in November and December. The BMAT medical schools will not obtain BMAT results until 25 November, so they will not call you for interview before this date.
